*Forward America!* is a color lithograph from about 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, and its title states its message plainly. Carroll Kelly's poster belongs to a large body of American wartime graphic art, produced in big print runs to rally civilians toward enlistment, war bond purchases, and home-front production. Such posters were hung in post offices, shops, and factories, where they had to catch the eye of passersby in a moment. Their direct, urgent appeal reflects how the wartime government and its printers used popular art to reach a broad public.
