Every garden a munition plant" is the line that sets this poster apart, casting a backyard vegetable plot as a contribution to the war effort. Issued around 1918 under the National War Garden Commission, which Charles Lathrop Pack headed, it encouraged Americans to grow their own food so that commercial supplies could go to troops and civilians overseas. James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his Uncle Sam recruiting poster, gave the appeal its direct question, asking viewers whether they would have a part in victory. Together, the patriotic message and the everyday image of gardening show how World War I reached into American homes and asked ordinary households to help win the war.
