Numbered first in a series attributed to the Wentworth Institute, this color lithograph poses its challenge in the title: "It Protected You, Will You Defend It." Dated around 1918, near the close of the First World War, it belongs to a flood of American posters that tied personal duty to the nation and asked civilians to enlist, buy bonds, or conserve. At 88 by 64 centimeters, it was built to be read from a distance, and its blunt question shows how directly wartime posters addressed ordinary citizens.
