This picture takes its title from the flag itself, the large star-spangled garrison flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the British bombardment of September 1814. Francis Scott Key saw it still flying after the attack and wrote the poem that became "The Star-Spangled Banner." The title marks the flag's centennial, when it had survived a century of handling, display and public attention. Its enduring worth lies in how a battle-worn piece of cloth came to stand for the nation.
