The poster's caption, "Every garden a munition plant," reframes a backyard vegetable patch as a contribution to the war effort. Its artist, James Montgomery Flagg, was best known for his "I Want You" recruiting poster, and this lithograph was produced for the National War Garden Commission, which the forester Charles Lathrop Pack helped organize in 1917. During the First World War the Commission urged Americans to plant home and community gardens, so that more commercially grown food could be shipped to troops and Allied countries. The poster shows how the government and its partners tried to make food conservation feel like a patriotic duty for ordinary households.
