Few exhibits at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia were as far from its machinery halls as a lighthouse and a row of buoys, which makes this stereograph an unusual view. The Centennial Photographic Company sold paired views of the fairgrounds in Fairmount Park, and cards like this one let viewers see the displays in three dimensions through a stereoscope. Navigation aids were sometimes shown at the fair as examples of federal work on the nation's coasts, a reminder that the exhibition was meant to celebrate American industry as well as art.
