Hastings sits where the Vermillion River meets the Mississippi, a few miles below St. Paul, and this 1867 bird's-eye view shows the town as its boosters wanted it seen: a river port with mills, streets, and a growing grid of houses. The drawing was made by Albert Ruger for the Chicago Lithographing Co., one of several panoramic town views he produced in the 1860s and 1870s. Such maps were usually drawn from an imagined high vantage point, with buildings shown in careful detail, and they were often sold to residents and businesses as a record of local progress. Looking closely, you can see the river traffic and the way the town's streets follow the bluffs and water.
