A horse and buggy stands in a farmyard in this photograph from about 1965, one of the Amish pictures in the Library of Congress's collection. For many Amish households the horse-drawn buggy was the everyday vehicle, part of a religious commitment to simplicity that led most communities to avoid automobiles, though rules varied from one settlement to another. Images like this record a way of working and traveling that changed little over generations while the surrounding countryside became increasingly motorized. The date and other details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
