Children gather outside the Tyler School in Washington, D.C., in a scene centered on a horse and buggy, an ordinary sight of the period that becomes a subject for study here. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, spent much of the late 1890s documenting the city's public schools, work that later contributed to a display of American education at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The print is a cyanotype, an inexpensive contact process that produces the pale blue tones typical of its era, and its date of about 1899 is marked as uncertain in the record. Notice how the horse, then the main means of getting around a city, draws the children's attention as much as the schoolhouse does.
