Here a wandering monk named Shintoku is shown curing a mute girl, the miracle that gives this two-page woodcut its subject. Dated to about 1713, the sheet comes from Japan's Edo period, when illustrated accounts of healings and wonders circulated widely among townspeople. Itinerant holy men of the time often drew crowds with such cures, and prints like this one carried their reputations well beyond the roads they traveled. Look closely at the monk's gestures and the faces of the onlookers, which show how the scene was meant to read as both marvel and moral lesson.
