This picture shows Godard at the wheel of a Motobloc, one of the French entries in the 1908 New York to Paris automobile race. The contest began in February 1908 and sent six cars on an overland route across North America, Siberia and Europe, with no paved roads for much of the way and few maps to guide the drivers. Newspapers on both continents followed it closely as a test of endurance and of automobile reliability. The Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, supplied photographs of such events to newspapers, so the image captures the public excitement of the start in New York. The caption data is unverified, so the exact moment and location are best read from the title alone.
