The name on this card points to its origin: it belongs to the T212 series, issued by the American Tobacco Company in 1909 and packed with Obak cigarettes. Like other tobacco cards of the period, it was meant to stiffen the pack and to encourage buyers to collect the whole set. Its color comes from chromolithography, a multistage printing process then common for commercial art, and the relief finish gives the surface a slightly raised texture. Cards like this were among the first widely distributed images of professional ballplayers, and they now serve as a record of how the sport and the tobacco trade promoted each other.
