What sets this card apart is its brown background, the feature that gives this variant of the T207 series its popular name. The American Tobacco Company issued these small color cards with its tobacco products in the early 1910s, and the set is among the most studied of the era, partly because of the rare Honus Wagner card in it. Printed in relief with halftone color, the card reflects the photomechanical methods that let manufacturers turn player portraits into collectible inserts. Its place in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection gives researchers a dated example of how baseball was packaged for fans more than a century ago.
