Most of the cards in this group show a ballplayer against a plain background, but this one is distinguished by its brown backdrop, which gave the T207 series its nickname. The American Tobacco Company printed the cards in color and tucked them into cigarette packs, a common marketing tactic of the period that encouraged buyers to collect whole sets. The card is dated 1912, and the Library of Congress catalogers gave it the "Brown Backgrounds" title because the series is known by that look. Its surviving examples now show how early twentieth-century advertising and sports fandom shaped each other.
