Printed on a brown background, this card is one of several color variants in the T207 series, a set of tobacco cards the American Tobacco Company packed with its cigarettes. The pictured ballplayers appear in small halftone portraits, and the set's many background colors are now the main way collectors sort their copies. The record dates this example to 1912, a few years after the cigarette cards became popular. The Library's Benjamin K. Edwards Collection preserves such cards as a record of how early baseball stars were presented to fans.
