Unlike the portrait cards it sits beside, this one is identified by its color: the brown background that gives it the "Brown Backgrounds" title, a label the Library's staff devised for the T207 group. The American Tobacco Company issued the set in the years around 1910 and 1912, packing the small cards into cigarette packages as a come-on for buyers. Its many background colors, including brown, let collectors chase variations across hundreds of players. The card comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards, which preserves the tobacco-era trade cards that helped make the sport's stars familiar to the public.
