Issued in 1911 by the American Tobacco Company, this card belongs to the T212 series, which was packed with Obak cigarettes. Tobacco firms of this era tucked colorful cards into cigarette packs to stiffen the packaging and encourage buyers to collect them, and the lithographic color printing here reflects how much effort went into making these small pieces attractive. Collectors today value the Obak set for its bright palette and its place in the early history of baseball cards, when the sport's stars were first sold to the public through everyday consumer goods. The card is preserved in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection at the Library of Congress.
