The Pension Building, which rose on Judiciary Square to house the offices that paid Civil War veterans and their families, was among the largest structures in Washington when this wood engraving appeared. It was made by Kilburn after a drawing by F. Myrick and published in Moore's *Picturesque Washington* in 1884, while construction was still underway. The brick building was designed under Montgomery C. Meigs and is known for its terra-cotta frieze of marching soldiers and sailors. Its enormous Great Hall later became a setting for inaugural balls.
