Numbered 7 of 25 and signed in pencil, *The offering* is an intaglio print, a family of techniques such as etching, engraving, and drypoint in which lines are cut or bitten into a metal plate and then pressed onto paper. Its date is not recorded, so it is best understood through its technique and the period of American printmaking it belongs to. The Library of Congress acquired it by purchase through the Pennell fund, named for the printmaker Joseph Pennell, whose gifts helped build the library's print collection. Karen F. Beall's 1970 catalog of American prints in the library lists the work, and that catalog is the main published reference for it.
