A plow sits nearly swallowed by drifted sand, its frame and blade lost under fine, wind-blown soil, with no people in view to explain how it came to rest there. Scenes like this are tied to the Great Plains in the 1930s, when years of drought and the plowing up of native grassland left topsoil loose enough for dust storms to strip fields and bury fences, farmsteads, and machinery. The buried implement is worth a close look, since it turns a tool meant to work the land into a record of what the land had lost.
