Cy Perkins, a catcher, is the subject of this portrait, taken in Philadelphia, where he played for the Athletics before moving on to the St. Louis Browns. The record dates it to about 1924, a time when the National Photo Company was documenting the city's sports figures and street life on glass plates. Those plates were a common format for news and studio work of the era, and the sharp detail of a player in uniform reflects that process. Look closely and you may see streaks or spots, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion rather than from the scene itself.
