The Hartford table was one of the many booths at the Metropolitan Fair, a benefit held in New York in April 1864 to raise money for the U.S. Sanitary Commission, which supported Union soldiers' health and welfare during the Civil War. Booths like this one, often sponsored by a town or city, displayed donated goods and patriotic decorations, and the flags in this view reflect the fair's wartime purpose. Stereograph cards such as this were made in pairs so that viewers could see depth through a stereoscope, a popular parlor device at the time. The card was registered for copyright by C.L. Wasson, and it passed through the collection of Marian S. Carson before reaching the Library of Congress.
