Tracks running along 11th Avenue on Manhattan's Far West Side point to the street-level freight line that once ran down the avenue, a route so dangerous that it earned the nickname "Death Avenue." Trains moved through the city's west side on tracks shared with trucks, wagons, and pedestrians until the elevated West Side line, now known as the High Line, was built in the 1930s to lift freight off the streets. The Bain News Service, which produced this glass negative, was a commercial picture agency that documented New York street life and industry in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the view is unconfirmed.
