Few early images of James Madison are as personal as this small bust miniature, which shows him with his head turned slightly to the right. Dated 1783, it was made when Madison was in his early thirties and serving in the Continental Congress, where he was building a reputation for careful study of government. Portrait miniatures of this kind were usually painted on ivory or similar small surfaces and kept as keepsakes, so the format suggests a portrait meant for family or close friends rather than public display. Madison later helped draft the United States Constitution and served as the fourth president, which gives this quiet likeness added weight.
