The reverse of this locket carries a Masonic emblem, and the portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette is inside, a pairing that reflects his ties to the fraternity. Lafayette, the French nobleman who served under George Washington in the American Revolution, was initiated into a Paris lodge in 1775 and held Masonic ideals of liberty and fellowship for the rest of his life. Keepsakes like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when Americans revered Lafayette, especially after his 1824 to 1825 tour of the United States. The record gives no date for this print, so its exact age is uncertain.
