A single prize diploma covering horses, cattle, pigs and poultry suggests one agricultural society judged all four kinds of livestock together, a reminder of how mixed farms depended on every kind of animal. Agricultural societies in the United States held such fairs from the mid-1800s onward, partly to share breeding methods and partly to reward farmers for improving their stock. Awards of this kind were often printed with ornamental borders and were proudly displayed in farmhouses. The range of categories it names is worth noticing, since it shows how broadly rural livestock raising was valued at the time.
