The subject here is a machine, the Ithaca Horse Rake, built by the firm of Titus & Bostwick in Ithaca, New York. A horse rake was drawn behind a horse and used to gather cut hay into rows so it could be loaded, saving a great deal of hand labor on the farm. In the nineteenth century Ithaca had several firms making farm machinery, and advertising pictures like this one often showed implements in use to help sell them. The horse is the real power behind the rake, a reminder of how much American farming depended on draft animals before the tractor.
