A puzzle at its center sets this print apart: a fox with a bewildered look, set in a busy scene where viewers are asked to find a horse, a lamb, a wild boar, and several men's and women's faces hidden in the lines. Published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1872, it belongs to a popular run of hidden-figure pictures the firm issued in the 1870s, when visual riddles were a common amusement in American homes. Currier & Ives sold such sheets cheaply to a broad public, and the Gale Research catalog raisonné lists this example as number 5403, a useful reference for anyone tracing the firm's output.
