Unlike the portraits of Benjamin Franklin elsewhere on this board, this wood engraving shows the place where he began his life: the Boston house on Milk Street where he was born on January 17, 1706, the youngest son of a tallow chandler and soap maker. *Harper's Weekly*, an illustrated New York newspaper, ran engravings like this to bring historic sites to a national readership, and this one appeared on page 500 of volume 16. The caption card gives no date, so the engraver and exact year of publication remain uncertain, but the subject reflects a nineteenth-century interest in tracing the origins of national heroes.
