The title points to the apron, the white lambskin garment Freemasons wore in lodge ceremonies, which this engraving uses as its target. It was published in Albany around 1831, when the city was a center of the Anti-Masonic movement. That movement grew out of outrage over the 1826 disappearance of William Morgan, a former Mason who had threatened to publish the order's secrets and who was believed to have been abducted and killed. Its fierce politics helped launch one of the first third-party campaigns in American history, and prints like this one carried its message to voters who could not read the longer pamphlets.
