Set up in the aftermath of the Johnstown Flood, this photograph shows a Masonic headquarters in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. On May 31, 1889, the failure of the South Fork Dam sent a torrent down the Conemaugh Valley, killing more than 2,000 people. Fraternal groups, including Masonic lodges, helped organize relief for survivors, distributing food, clothing and supplies in the weeks that followed. The print carries a copyright credit to the photography firm Langill & Darling, and its details come from an older caption card, so some information may not be fully verified.
