Here the Statue of Liberty is given a voice and asks for help instead of silently watching over New York Harbor. This 1918 lithograph by Z.P. Nikolaki uses that familiar figure to urge Americans to supply the billions of dollars the war effort needed. Liberty Bonds, sold in a series of government campaigns beginning in 1917 after the United States entered World War I, were a major way the country financed its own army and its allies. Posters like this one carried those appeals into streets, shops and workplaces, and their blunt wording shows how much the war depended on borrowing from ordinary citizens.
