Urging readers to "save all steel and coal for our factories," this 1918 French lithograph makes its appeal in the title itself. Signed by M. Héringfeld, the poster takes industrial smokestacks as its central emblem of national effort. By 1918, shortages of coal and steel had made economy a patriotic duty on the French home front, since both materials fed the munitions and metalworks that supplied the army in the war's final year. The poster is worth noticing for treating the factory itself as a symbol of the war effort.
