Civilians are asked here to hold back their wine so that the French soldiers called *poilus*, or "hairy ones," could be supplied. Suzanne Ferrand signed this color lithograph, printed in 1916 at 56 by 39 centimeters. Wine was part of the daily ration for many French troops, so wartime appeals like this one treated a household drink as a question of supply and morale. The poster shows how the war reached into ordinary kitchens and dinner tables as well as the front lines.
