Pour que vos enfants ne" trails off mid-sentence, which translates roughly as "So that your children do not," and the unfinished phrasing is typical of French wartime appeals that drew the viewer in with a plea before stating the demand. Dated 1917, it comes from the third year of the war, when France had suffered enormous losses and civilians were being asked to buy war bonds, give to relief funds, and keep factories and fields running. Posters like this were usually aimed at parents, especially mothers, linking private fear for children to public duty. The direct address in "vos enfants," meaning "your children," is worth noticing, since it speaks to the individual reader rather than to the nation as a whole.
