What sets this poster apart is its tree. Savings are pictured as a plant that bears fruit only when it is tended, a metaphor the French slogan makes explicit: save your money to get the best fruit. Leonetto Cappiello, the Italian-born designer who worked in Paris and was known for bold color and lively figures, signed it, and it dates to 1920, when France was rebuilding after the First World War under heavy debt and reconstruction costs. It belongs to a wider wave of postwar appeals urging citizens to save and invest in national recovery. The color lithograph shows how commercial printing techniques were used to carry civic messages into the street.
