Careers ahead" stands out on this board because its sponsor was the Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that put a stage-minded spin on a message about work. Designed by Beard in 1936, the silkscreen poster addresses employment in Illinois during the Depression, when joblessness was widespread. Its flat areas of color and simple drawing were typical of the Works Progress Administration's poster division, which produced a large body of public notices. A date stamp on the back, reading Sep 7 1939, shows the poster was handled and filed some years after it was first printed.
