Newtown Pippin apples were among the most prized fruit in American and English markets through the nineteenth century, and this crate label promoted one brand of them. Such labels were printed in color lithography and pasted onto wooden shipping crates, where they worked as early advertising, using bright landscapes, fruit, and bold lettering to catch the eye of buyers in crowded commission houses. The Newtown Pippin, a green-skinned variety first grown on Long Island, was favored for its keeping qualities and was shipped to Europe in quantity. Labels like this one reveal how growers from the orchard regions of the West Coast and Northeast marketed their produce, and they remain valuable records of commercial design from the period.
