The Blue Ridge Parkway runs for hundreds of miles along the crest of the Appalachians, and its waterfalls are often reached by short trails from roadside pullouts. This picture uses a long exposure to smooth moving water into a silky white band that spills over moss-covered boulders, a look that slows the flow to a soft veil. The Parkway was begun in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project and was built to showcase the mountain scenery of Virginia and North Carolina. Long-exposure views like this one have become a familiar way to show how the region's streams and rock faces look when the water is given time to blur.
