The title places Theodore Roosevelt in the rooms of Mercy Hospital on December 17, 1910, though the Bain News Service's own label is unverified, so the city and the reason for his visit are not confirmed here. By then Roosevelt had left the White House in 1909, returned from his African and European travels in mid-1910, and was keeping a busy schedule of speeches and political commentary. The picture is a small-format glass negative from George Grantham Bain's agency, which supplied news photographs to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century, and its documentary quality is worth noticing.
