The name Miss S.P. Brook comes from a title the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, but the record marks it as unverified, so the identity of the woman pictured remains uncertain. The glass plate dates to about 1920, when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, produced large numbers of portraits and city views on glass. The 8 by 6 inch format was common for studio and documentary work of that era. Viewers should also notice the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
