Few details survive about the sitter of this glass negative, whose title, *Miss Laura Eckets*, comes from a label supplied by the studio and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm based in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of portraits and news pictures on glass plates like this 8 by 6 inch example, which is dated to about 1920 from similar negatives in the same group. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes in the coating, the result of natural deterioration over the decades since the plate was exposed.
