The title places this print in 1876, the nation's centennial year, when the Republican ticket of Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler faced Samuel Tilden and the Democrats. That race ended in a disputed result that an electoral commission did not settle until early 1877. Campaign prints of this kind often cast the candidates as heirs to the founders, a theme that suited the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition held that summer. The record's date and attribution are only partly verified, so treat those details with some caution.
