A dark intersection, a speeding car, and three deaths make up the message of this poster, which ties a fatal crash to the lack of working street lights. The subject headings point to vandalism of street lighting in New York State during the 1930s, when broken lamps left some corners unlit at night. The image was produced under the Federal theater Project, one of the New Deal programs of the Works Progress Administration, whose poster units used the silkscreen process to make inexpensive, bold public-service messages. Its color and blunt wording reflect that effort to reach a broad public quickly.
