A horse and wagon on the sands at Margate, the Kent resort Londoners reached by rail for a day or a holiday, sets this drawing apart from the other horse subjects on the board. It was probably made for Elizabeth Robins Pennell's article "London at Play: On Margate's Sands," which ran in *The Century* in August 1897, though the record indicates the drawing was not published with it. The small pen-and-ink sheet is signed in ink and shows the kind of everyday beach traffic that illustrators of the period liked to record. Victorian seaside holidays drew working and middle-class visitors alike, so scenes like this one document a popular leisure culture as much as the animals themselves.
