A glass negative pairing Mrs. Thomas A. Edison with Madame Jusserand and Jean Jules Jusserand, the French ambassador to the United States from 1903 to 1925, sets this picture apart from the other portraits on the board. Mina Miller Edison, the inventor's second wife, took part in the family's public and social life at Glenmont in West Orange, New Jersey. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied pictures like this to newspapers and magazines. The names come from Bain caption cards that the record marks as unverified, so the exact occasion is uncertain, but the image still documents the meeting of American and French diplomatic society.
