The subject here is rumor itself, shown through wolves, a long-standing image of predators and whispered danger, at a time when Depression-era anxieties ran high. Issued in 1939 under the Federal theater Project, the poster reflects the program's effort to draw audiences to stage productions through eye-catching public art. The Work Projects Administration employed artists to make posters like this one, and silkscreen printing allowed them to produce bold, flat color in modest runs. Congress ended the Federal theater Project that same year, which makes this poster a brief record of a program that did not last long.
