Few American yachts of the 1880s drew as much public attention as the *Puritan*, a Boston-owned sloop that defended the America's Cup in 1885 against the British challenger *Genesta*. This chromolithograph, published by Currier & Ives around 1885 and signed by the artist Charles R. Parsons, turns that rivalry into a lively marine scene of sails and racing water. Currier & Ives built much of its reputation on such topical prints, which gave Americans colorful, affordable views of the events and vessels they were reading about in the newspapers. The print also shows the late-nineteenth-century enthusiasm for yacht racing as a sport of wealthy New England families.
