Cincinnati sat on the Ohio River across from slaveholding Kentucky, which made it one of the best-known crossing points for people escaping bondage in the 1850s and 1860s. Charles T. Webber, a Cincinnati painter, took up that setting in the original canvas now held by the Cincinnati Art Museum. This albumen print reproduces the painting in the early 1890s, when such reproductions helped spread popular images of the Underground Railroad. Its subject is the flight itself: fugitives, and the people who helped them, moving through a landscape where every step carried risk.
