Among the Darktown caricatures Currier & Ives issued in the 1880s and 1890s, this 1890 lithograph presents a riding class in which the humor depends on Black figures struggling to ride, mocking them for pursuits from which they were largely excluded. The series belonged to a wider stream of racist "comic" prints that circulated widely and reinforced stereotypes used to justify segregation after Reconstruction. Today the print is studied as evidence of how popular visual humor cast Black Americans as objects of ridicule, and it is best viewed with that history in mind.
